Exhibition in the Project Space
American Abstract Artists International
75th Anniversary

To mark the 75th anniversary of »American Abstract Artists«, the Deutscher Künstlerbund (Association of German Artists) presents a joint exhibition in cooperation with Galerie oqbo, taking place simultaneously at both project spaces. Works by 75 American and German artists give an overview of different contemporary forms of abstract art. The works of the American Abstract Artists will be accompanied by a selection of ten abstract positions from the Deutscher Künstlerbund and Galerie oqbo’s »paperfile«.

»American Abstract Artists« was founded as an artists’ association in New York City in 1936, at a time when abstract art in America was strongly rejected by mainstream art criticism. Founding members included Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky and other important abstract artists. The group was soon joined by émigré artists from Europe such as Lyonel Feininger, Fernand Léger, László Moholy-Nagy and Piet Mondrian. Members like Ad Reinhardt were precursors of the »New York School« and »Abstract Expressionism«. With exhibitions, publications, public discussion forums and readings, »American Abstract Artists« paved the way for a theoretical engagement with abstract art in America, making a decisive contribution to its development and acceptance.

»American Abstract Artists« has pursued its founding concept to this day, and over its 75-year history, it has organised more than a hundred exhibitions in museums, galleries and universities in American and abroad – always seeking to provide a forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas with an open enthusiasm for abstract art in all its various forms.

An exhibition by Galerie oqbo in cooperation with the Deutscher Künstlerbund (Association of German Artists), initiated by Don Voisine (New York City) and Michael Bause (Berlin).
