Gogol´s wives: We Are Not the Good Russians

Friday, November 13, 2026 │ 7 p.m.

Projektraum Deutscher Künstlerbund

> How to find us

The film and art collective Gogol´s wives —Taisiya Krougovykh and Vasily Bogatov—used to work in Russia with Pussy Riot, FEMEN, and, most recently, with the banned human rights organization Memorial. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, they went into exile in Paris.

In the first conversation of the new series »Heiße Eisen« (Hot Topics), titled »We Are Not the Good Russians«, Taisiya Krougovykh and Vasily Bogatov talk with Justin Time, board member of Deutscher Künstlerbund, about their work and the conditions for this work in Russia and in exile, and how a new identity as migrants influences their art production.

Examples of their films and installations - WHERE IS MY VOICE / WHERE IS MY VOTE (2012), MEMORIAL/LIQUIDATION (2025), CORPS FLOTTANTS (2025), and DISOBEY (2026) provide an opportunity to explore political action and artistic production in exile. How can the critical voices of a country like Russia be strengthened? What does working in exile mean, and what does »Freedom of Art«—the founding theme of Deutscher Künstlerbund—mean for them as political artists against this backdrop? How does their new identity as migrants change their perspective? Are we guilty?

The »Heiße Eisen« series addresses issues that are currently controversially debated. We aim to bring some of these issues to the table and foster a constructive dialogue that both allows for different perspectives and seeks common ground.

The event will be held in English.
Film clips in Russian with English subtitles.
