About the exhibition
This fall, the German Artists’ Association is launching two parallel participatory projects with its members.
Wallpaper
Starting September 3, 2026, the project space will be transformed into a growing, collaborative wall collage: Under the theme »Why I Make Art,« all members are invited to contribute artistic works, thoughts, or perspectives—freely designed, up to DIN A1 size, whether painted, drawn, printed, or collaged—as long as they are two-dimensional and can be affixed to the wall with wallpaper paste.
Members actively participate in the ongoing transformation of the collective exhibition in the form of a wall newspaper. The basic idea is to create a collective, visual space for reflection that relates both to the annual theme »Freedom of Art« and to personal artistic perspectives.The walls serve as a dynamic medium for open exchange: with each new submission or direct intervention, the structure of the work changes. The wall becomes a performative spatial structure in which time, participation, and a diversity of voices become visible. Over time, the wall becomes denser—overlaps and intersections are an explicit part of the concept.

Travelling Books
On September 12, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., as part of Berlin Art Week, the project space will open for the first exchange as part of »Travelling Books«—a gathering centered on artist books and text collections. Many of our members publish books or catalogs that document and reflect on their artistic themes. We would like to present and exhibit artists’ books and printed works by our members from recent years.
Members who are in Berlin will personally present their own books that afternoon and engage in conversation with other authors and artists. Afterward, the books will be taken to additional locations throughout Germany, which are currently still being planned. This format highlights the diversity of our members’ artistic practices, fosters dialogue about them, and promotes networking at the subsequent venues. Starting September 3, the books will be on view in the project space alongside the “Wallpaper” exhibition.
Entrance is free of charge.
