In the complete work of Thomas Grochowiak the affinity between the two art forms, painting and music, plays a decisive role. Music is the driving force behind his pictorial designing. However, Grochowiak does not try to translate music directly into painting. It rather serves him as a stimulation. In his Berlin exhibition, Grochowiak shows a number of rare examples of his early work as well as of his newer work that has developed since 1999.
Grochowiak's work continues the long artistic tradition of synaesthesia in visual arts, the linkage of two different sensory perceptions – of seeing and hearing – similar to the Skrijabinian colour piano or Kandinsky's attempts to assign acoustic stimuli to particular colours.
Thomas Grochowiak was born in Recklinghausen in 1914. He has been closely connected with the Deutscher Künstlerbund for many decades and actively shaped its fate: in 1952 he participated in the annual exhibition for the first time and was represented regularly ever since. In 1964 he was elected to the board of managing directors of the Künstlerbund and was the first chairman from 1979-1985. In 1987 he was nominated an honorary member. 
Aside from his artistic activity, Grochowiak has been involved in various ways in the cultural sector. Thus, he directed a museum in Recklinghausen, was a curator e.g. at the Ruhrfestspiele and commissioner of German art at the Bi- and Triennials in Paris, Zagreb, Bratislava and New Delhi.
