Marker #1: Otto Piene »Lighttrain«
Otto Piene's attitude has always been characterised by generosity and openness and directed against the exclusive restriction of cultural activities/the art world. He regards the ability/gift of the artist to change society as an obligation. Since the 1960s he has deployed the physical inclusion of the audience in order to activate it.
»Lighttrain« marks the beginning of the exhibition sequence »marker« that introduces prophets and pacemakers of art history. Otto Piene anchors the recent production of young positions in the context of this year's Transmediale, which proceeds under the heading »Basics« and raises questions about the social responsibility of the artist.

Otto Piene was born in 1928 in Laasphe. Since 1985 he has constantly taken part in the exhibition activities of the Deutscher Künstlerbund; in 1961 he became a member. The 1965 exhibition in the Haus am Waldsee, Berlin as well as the Luftprojekt (air project) for the exhibition of the Deutscher Künstlerbund in the Künstlerhaus Nürnberg in 1968 are to be pointed out. In 1988, the solo exhibition »Otto Piene« of the Künstlerbund and the CAVS in the Badischer Kunstverein Karlsruhe introduced Piene's work as a teacher, multiplier and communicator. Piene lives in Groton/Mass., USA and Düsseldorf.
